Attachments shown as a paperclip on the side (not embedded)

I just realized that some of the posts have the little paper clip over on the right hand side and so there are pictures (.png's) or things attached to the post. Did these used to be embedded in the post but now there are not?

 

I thought the caterwalling was that you had to save things and then attach them (but yet embedded in the discussion). Now I just realized that they are not even in the post and you have to click on them separately. No wonder a bunch of discussions and stuff didn't make sense.

I think these are just visual indiators of content in the post.  For example, if you include a link in your post, the link picture automatically shows up.
