Invalid material assignment isotropic beam?

I have two parts: a beam assigned an isotropic material and a shell assigned an orthotropic material. When I run a static analysis, I am informed that the beam has not received a valid material assignment.

When I run the static analysis with both parts being assigned an isotropic material, there is no issue.

What could be the root of the problem?
