    Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, thankfully!
    Otherwise it would be really big trouble for the inhabitants of Zafferana Etnea.

    About 20 years ago I was visiting the place where that capital stands.

     

    From the photo you can't see it, but I can tell you that a later eruption penetrated inside the capital and stopped at the base of the pedestal where a statue of the holy Mary is placed.

      Stephen, I just updated my previuos post.

       

      Normally the lava comes out of the southwest crater and ends up in the Bove Valley which is a huge desert basin where it accumulates without doing any damage.

      When it doesn't it is a problem for the inhabitants.
      Often ash and lapilli force the airport of Catania to close, sometimes they have to close even that of Palermo.
