Importing a drawing with program into a drawing without program

Hello,

How would you import a drawing which has a Program into a drawing (without a Program), without losing the Program?

Sometimes our users will need to update the template (frame) of an existing drawing.

The existing (old) drawing does not have a Drawing Program, but the new Template does have a Program. Additionally, we want the parameters to be copied automatically.

Then what we are doing is IMPORT DRAWING (the new template with the Program) into the existing old drawing. The empty new template appears on a new sheet. Then we move the model views to the new template and we delete the original sheet.

The problem is that the Drawing Program (contained in the new template) is lost and must be added manually again, because we are importing it into an old drawing which does not have a Program.

Therefore we find that Templates with Program work for new drawings, but not when you need to update old drawings.

Can you think of an alternative to change the drawing template, making sure we keep the Programcoming from the new template?

Try the import in the reverse order.

 

Create a new drawing using the template with the program, and then import the original drawing into the new drawing.  This should keep the program, although I don't have a drawing w/ a program to test this quickly.

 

You'll have to deal with the renaming of the new drawing.  There are several easy methods of doing this. Which renaming method you use will depend on whether you're using Windchill (or another DB manager) or not.

Thanks Dan,

Importing in reverse order works, it keeps the drawing program.

The thing is, we use Windchill and I think the replacement of the drawing in Windchill using the same name, even if it's possible, would be more difficult for our CAD users to perform than just adding the drawing program once, as they are more comfortable with Creo functionality than with potential workspace/Windchill upload issues.

Also, you can add the drawing program anytime (the lack of this Program is very easy to visually spot in our new frames), versus the renaming/replacement process in Windchill that has to be performed timely in order to avoid check-in issues, which are especially frustrating in some circumstances.

So I think our users will go for the manual copy/paste of the new Program, eventually.
