Question

windows explorer stopped

Hello fellow Pro/Users

I see fairly frequently some behavior that is not right and I wonder if
anyone else experiences the same and maybe has a solution / hint.

While running Pro WF5 (Creo Elements Pro--- All the productivity gains from
the UI enhancements are negated by the time needed to explain what version
one uses. Pity.)

No PDM - Win7 x64

I set a working folder (obviously). While running, if I navigate to that
folder using Win Explorer - MANY (not all) times I will get "Windows
Explorer has stopped working. Restarting now."

Windows Explorer windows and the Task Bar blink away. The task bar comes
back in 2 seconds and I launch Win Explorer again. Everything is fine until
I navigate to the working folder again. Then, probably 50% of the time, Win
Explorer stops again.

My guess is this is an environment setting, but I would not know which or
how to fix it.

Any thoughts?

-Nate

On Windows 7 pro we have had this problem and two fixes seem to work.
    1) shut off Aero interface. If this works look at graphics card drivers, mouse drivers, etc...
    2) We had problems with the preview pane in Win Explorer, especially previewing PDF files. We turn preview off.

    Good luck.

I agree with the above statement. Windows Explorer would crash all the time until I turned off the preview pane.

I still run the aero interface and don't have issues there - I think the Preview pane is the culprit here.

Ok - I am sure that could be the issue I am seeing. I will ensure that it
is off the next time I am working in Pro.

Thanks to all for the advice!

Just to clarify - it doesn't matter if Pro/E is running or not. Explorer still crashes a LOT. I just tested this by turning the preview pane back on (after shutting down pro/e) and it took about 15 seconds for it to crash after I browsed to by Pro/E work directory area.

I just turned off the preview pane and left it off (for years).

If anyone out there knows of a fix for this that still allows the preview pane to work, I would love to hear it!

In windoze 7 I immediately go to Computer Properties/Advanced system settings/Performance settings/Adjust for best performance. In one fell swoop you get rid of all the redunkulous Redmond garbage and overhead. Makes for a much better working and responding machine.

    David,

I ran XP that way for years and I figured with win7 and 64bit I could try
out the eye candy for a while - just to see what the hoopla was about. Then
it sucked me in and I forgot about that setting until you just mentioned
it. I am going there now. But I do really like the doc preview fnx in
explorer. Does that really have to go away? Can't they just make it work?
Does this happen in Creo2? I am poised to get back on maint. and update my
    version.

    Redunkulous - nice.

    Thanks more!

Just for giggles I decided to turn it off because I always have users that gripe and complain about how slow the system is. Windchill seemed faster in Chrome, but when I tried to open an upper level assembly in CREO it went poof. I turned it back on and the assembly then was able to open in CREO. Don't know if it is because I didn't reboot after changing it.
