Difference Between Node Lock & Floating License

First lets understand what is a Floating License & a Node Locked License:

Floating License

  • Open the license file in a text editor
  • Floating license file contains server and daemon information as
    • SERVER __HOSTNAME__ PTC_HOSTID=<SERVER_HOST_ID> 7788
    • DAEMON ptc_d __PTCD_PATH__

Additional details -

  1. A floating license refers to a licensing scheme where the permission to execute the PTC product is controlled by the FlexNet server (the PTC license server)
  2. In the FlexNet server environment any machine configured as a client will be allowed to use floating licenses until the number of licenses purchased has been exhausted
  3. The installation of a floating license(s) requires an authorization string, which is specific to the number of licenses (seats) purchased, the expiration date and the PTC_HOSTID for the machine to run the FLEXnet server program

For example refer below image:

Node-Lock license

File contains only machine specific HOST ID(alphanumeric number in format of XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX) without any server and daemon information

More details:

  1. A node-locked or simply fixed license is a FlexNet license file configured to hostID of a specific machine
  2. Does not require the machine to connect to a FLEXnet server
  3. Allows the PTC applications to run only on that specific machine for which the license has been generated
