Vuforia Chalk end of service notice
As a valued customer, we would like to inform you about some important changes to our services. After reviewing our product portfolio, PTC has decided to re-align its remote assistance strategy and offerings as a Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) offering through ServiceMax Zinc.
As a result, PTC will be retiring our Vuforia Chalk service on October 31, 2025 and recommending a migration to ServiceMax Zinc. ServiceMax Zinc is a remote collaboration tool that is now integrated within PTC’s Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) portfolio through PTC’s acquisition of ServiceMax last year.
Existing Chalk customers and users can continue to use Chalk through October 31, 2025. We will continue to release security updates for our apps & services during this transition time. However, we will no longer be updating Chalk’s feature set going forward.
Why we are retiring Chalk?
As a result of PTC acquiring ServiceMax Zinc, we saw overlap between Chalk and Zinc’s vision, capabilities and features. We have decided to channel our focus towards Zinc that will enable us to deliver to our customers’ needs more efficiently. With this consolidation, we believe the future is now brighter for our customers trying to enable remote service & support capabilities for their business. We acknowledge that in the short run this may be disruptive to our Chalk customers. Therefore, we hope to minimize that disruption by providing over a year’s notice of the change.
What do I need to do?
There is nothing that you need to do at this time. For very active customers, your account manager or partner will contact you to guide and support you through this transition. For all other customers, we will automatically transition you to Zinc and invite you to a Zinc Org to setup and use. All existing customers will be provided the same quantity of Zinc licenses at the same price as Chalk.
We are confident that you will be happy with Zinc, as Zinc has capabilities & features today that were on Chalk’s roadmap such as desktop screensharing, chat, and document and file transfers. Chalk customers will see that Zinc is specially designed for service & support operations to enable teams to collaborate intelligently, streamline communication with automation and AI, and to help everyone stay connected and aligned. Start familiarizing yourself with Zinc by watching this 2-minute Zinc video.
We’re here to help
Both Chalk and Zinc teams are committed to guide and support our customers during this transition. We will share additional information, details and tips on our Vuforia Chalk Community site that develop during our transition period based on questions, feedback and learnings from our customers.
However, if after exploring Zinc you have any questions or concerns or you determine that Zinc is not the right fit for your business needs, please contact us via email at chalk.now@ptc.com.
We hope you stay with us and be part of our next chapter through Zinc!

Hi, @tmccombie
Given the 2-minute Zinc video above, it is no AR annotation capability with Zinc.
How and when the Chalk API integrated with Zinc?
https://community.ptc.com/t5/Vuforia-Chalk/API-for-chalk/m-p/877114
Does this have good news to share with community?
AR annotation is the key feature that we love to have in the future.
Looking forward for any response, much appreciate.
regards,
ClarK

Hi @dsgnrClarK ,
Thank you for your response.
Zinc currently does not have Chalk's "sticky" AR annotations but has similar annotation capabilities with "live annotations" (these do not "stick" to the physical object) and a still-frame annotation (take a snapshot then annotate on the captured image). Would these features meet your needs, or are the "sticky" annotations a key feature for you?
Could you also provide some details on your API use-case?

Hi, @tmccombie
Indeed, the Sticky AR annotation is the key feature to our need.
As to API, the workflow in post https://community.ptc.com/t5/Vuforia-Chalk/API-for-chalk/m-p/877114 could be beneficial.
However, it seems that needs Chalk still works in service in parallel with Zinc.
Our best wish is that Zinc would have the sticky AR annotation feature somehow, with or without API.
Is there a roadmap about it?
Thank you for reply.
Best Regards,
ClarK

Hi @dsgnrClarK -- thanks for the question and feedback!
Chalk will continue to be operational in parallel while we help our existing customers transition to Zinc. I would encourage (and welcome) you to get setup with Zinc, so you can try it out and let us know if will support your current or ideal use-case. I feel Zinc might be better than Chalk in terms of fit for our industrial customers' workflows ...and this is based on my familiarity with Chalk and my sense based on what our customers were using Chalk for.
However, the one item that I did see as a potential key gap, is the "sticky" 3D-AR annotations. Zinc has comparable annotation capabilities, but not the "stickiness" that Chalk (and AR technology) provided. Out of curiosity - what is your need and why were our "sticky" 3D-AR annotations valuable for it? Why wouldn't a "floating" annotation or an image-based annotation not be "good enough" for your need?
I'd like to share your feedback with the Zinc team and treat as a feature request. Your feedback could eventually motivate a priority towards integrating our "sticky" 3D-AR annotations technology into their product.
Sincerely,
Product
