ThingWorx 10.2 brings a major step forward in industrial AI, interoperability, developer productivity, and connected operations—helping organizations build smarter applications, connect industrial data more openly, and accelerate the journey from experimentation to enterprise-scale deployment.

ThingWorx 10.2 builds on the platform's core strengths while introducing a new generation of agentic AI capabilities, including the ThingWorx AI Assistant, MCP Server, and an enterprise foundation for building secure and governed AI agents. The release also brings important enhancements to developer workflows, MQTT and Unified Namespace interoperability, Smart Connected Operations applications, service management, and the underlying technology stack.

Introducing ThingWorx AI
 

AI is one of the biggest areas of investment in ThingWorx 10.2.

The release introduces the agentic AI capabilities, providing a foundation for building AI assistants and agents that can work with enterprise systems, industrial data, ThingWorx applications, and operational workflows. The goal is to move beyond standalone AI experiences and make industrial context available to AI in a secure, governed, and reusable way.

ThingWorx AI includes:

  • ThingWorx AI Assistant

  • AI Runtime and Agent Services

  • Native AI Agent entity

  • Integrated Model Context Protocol (MCP) support

  • Low-code administration and configuration tools

  • Enterprise governance, monitoring, and observability capabilities

Organizations can build domain-specific AI assistants that interact with operational data through natural language, delivering insights, diagnostics, investigations, recommendations, and reporting directly within ThingWorx applications.

A key design principle behind ThingWorx AI is that industrial AI must be grounded in real operational context. Rather than simply adding a chatbot, ThingWorx AI leverages existing industrial models, services, security controls, and contextualized data already present within the platform.

ThingWorx 10.2 introduces the general availability of the ThingWorx MCP Server and MCP Namespace framework.

MCP provides a standardized way for AI systems to securely discover and interact with enterprise applications, tools, resources, and business workflows.

With ThingWorx MCP support, developers can:

  • Expose ThingWorx services as AI-accessible tools

  • Publish resources and prompts through MCP namespaces

  • Build secure AI integrations using existing ThingWorx security models

  • Connect AI systems to industrial applications using an open protocol approach

To accelerate adoption, ThingWorx also includes an out-of-the-box AgentUtilities MCP namespace that provides a rich set of prebuilt tools for common platform operations such as querying properties, viewing alert history, invoking services, updating values, and searching enterprise content.
 

Developer Productivity


Developer productivity continues to be a major investment area for ThingWorx. As industrial applications become larger, more distributed, and increasingly managed through modern DevOps practices, development teams need tools that integrate naturally with source control systems, CI/CD pipelines, modern IDEs, and AI-assisted development environments.

One of the most significant improvements in ThingWorx 10.2 is deterministic import and export. Historically, developers could export functionally identical applications from different environments and still encounter unnecessary differences caused by ordering, timestamps, or deployment-specific metadata. These differences created noisy Git diffs, increased merge conflicts, and slowed code reviews. With deterministic export, ThingWorx now produces consistent and reproducible outputs, making version control cleaner and significantly reducing collaboration friction across large development teams.

ThingWorx is also introducing a new JSON-based source control format, currently available as a preview capability in 10.2 and planned for general availability in ThingWorx 10.2.1. Unlike traditional exports, the JSON format separates core entity definitions from source artifacts such as services, subscriptions, mashup content, and custom styling. Developers can manage and version individual components independently, making changes easier to review, automate, and maintain within modern Git workflows. The format was specifically designed to work more naturally with source control systems, automation pipelines, and emerging AI-assisted development tooling.

Additional productivity enhancements include standalone JavaScript source management and continued investments in debugging capabilities. Building on the JavaScript Debugger released in previous versions, the Subscription Debugger introduced in 10.1.1 allows developers to trigger subscriptions on demand, step through event-driven logic, inspect execution context, inject custom payloads, and troubleshoot complex runtime behavior without waiting for live events to occur. Together, these improvements reduce troubleshooting effort and help development teams move from debugging platform behavior to delivering business value faster.
 

Interoperability & Unified Namespace
 

Enhanced Interoperability with MQTT v5

Industrial organizations increasingly operate in heterogeneous technology environments where manufacturing systems, cloud platforms, analytics solutions, and AI applications all need access to trusted operational data. Rather than introducing proprietary integration models, customers are asking for open architectures that allow information to flow more naturally across the industrial ecosystem.

ThingWorx 10.2.1 advances this vision through a major modernization of the MQTT Extension with support for MQTT v5, event-driven messaging, improved scalability, certificate-based authentication, and a new HiveMQ-based architecture. More importantly, these capabilities help applications work with the business meaning embedded within MQTT topics rather than relying solely on payload-to-property mappings. This makes ThingWorx a stronger foundation for Unified Namespace (UNS) and Industrial DataOps architectures where context is as important as the data itself.

This work builds upon broader interoperability investments made over the last several releases, including IoT Streams, MQTT egress, and support for open industrial data exchange initiatives. One example is ThingWorx support for the CESMII Smart Manufacturing Profile (SM Profile) and related interoperability efforts. Through support for open industry models and initiatives such as I3X (Industrial Interoperability and Integration Framework), organizations can exchange manufacturing information using shared business context instead of creating custom point-to-point integrations. These field-driven interoperability efforts help manufacturers improve data portability, reduce integration complexity, and accelerate adoption of modern digital manufacturing architectures
 

Smart Connected Operations
 

Many of the enhancements in ThingWorx 10.2 are focused on helping manufacturers make faster and more confident operational decisions. Across RTPPM and DPM, several improvements increase visibility into production performance while reducing the effort required to investigate issues and maintain data accuracy. For example, new waste quantity adjustment capabilities allow production teams to reclassify historical production data without affecting overall production counts. This provides far greater flexibility when quality inspections identify issues after production has already been completed, helping operations teams maintain more accurate production records and KPI reporting.

For manufacturers focused on continuous improvement programs, DPM now provides traceability for ideal cycle time changes. Plant managers and production engineers can track when cycle times were modified, who made the change, and what values were updated. This seemingly simple capability can have a significant impact when analyzing performance trends, validating process improvements, or investigating unexpected changes in OEE calculations. Combined with additional performance analysis enhancements and improved support for large result sets, teams gain access to more reliable operational insights at scale.

Operational users also benefit from several usability improvements across AMU and Connected Work Cell. Saved filter preferences, automatic alarm refresh capabilities, improved workstation handling, transaction reliability enhancements, and numerous workflow improvements reduce day-to-day administrative effort for operators, supervisors, and maintenance teams. Rather than introducing entirely new workflows, these enhancements focus on improving the speed, consistency, and reliability of activities that frontline teams perform every day.
 

Smart Connected Products
 

Organizations managing fleets of connected products continue to face increasing demands for scale, reliability, security, and lifecycle management. ThingWorx 10.2 introduces a number of enhancements designed to help customers manage connected devices and software deployments more efficiently while reducing operational complexity.

Within Software Content Management (SCM), new deployment dependency capabilities provide greater control over software rollouts by supporting more sophisticated deployment relationships. Improved repository handling and high availability support help organizations manage larger software catalogs and perform upgrades with greater confidence. For teams responsible for software distribution at scale, these enhancements improve deployment reliability while reducing operational overhead.

The release also modernizes several key connectivity and edge technologies. The Azure IoT Hub Connector now leverages a newer Azure SDK architecture, provides managed identity support, and improves partition management and migration workflows. Enhancements across the Axeda Compatibility Package and Edge MicroServer focus on reliability, scalability, security updates, offline messaging control, and modernization of the underlying technology stack. Together, these improvements help organizations operate connected product ecosystems more securely and at greater scale while simplifying lifecycle management and future upgrade paths
 

Security, Scalability & Platform Modernization
 

Not every critical platform improvement is visible to end users. Behind the scenes, ThingWorx 10.2 continues significant investments in platform modernization, security, supportability, and long-term lifecycle management. Updated support for technologies such as Windows Server 2025, Ubuntu 24.04, PostgreSQL 17, Tomcat 11, RabbitMQ 4.x, Apache Flink 2.2, and Java 21 helps customers align with modern enterprise infrastructure standards while maintaining supported environments for future growth.

In addition to platform stack updates, the release includes numerous security, dependency, scalability, and operational improvements across the broader ThingWorx ecosystem. These investments help customers reduce operational risk, simplify platform maintenance, improve resilience, and prepare for future technology adoption initiatives.
