Thingworx upgrade

I am using ThingWorx Platform Release 8.5 and DatecodeSP2 Our customer is currently using ThingWorx 8.5.2-b90, which is an older platform version. We plan to propose a migration to a currently supported or latest ThingWorx version to improve platform supportability, security, performance, and future compatibility. The current environment consists of: - Current Version: ThingWorx 8.5.2-b90 - Number of Projects: 41 projects - Custom CSS: Custom CSS is implemented across all 41 projects - Existing Customizations: Custom services, widgets, UI configurations, and other project-specific customizations may be present - Migration Objective: Migrate the existing applications and configurations to the target supported/latest ThingWorx version while minimizing impact to business operations. Do you have specific questions regarding your upgrade/migration?  What version are you planning to migrate to? 

Since 8.5 is such an old release, you’ll need to set up a clone of the current environment.  It’s recommended that you install on a VM so you can take snapshots in order to easily revert if you run into issues.  It’s also recommended that you clone Prod to ensure you have the full database that will be upgraded to allow you to take timings during each phase of the upgrade.  However, you’ll need to make sure all integrations have been disabled in the cloned environment to maintain the integrity of your production data.

If you’re planning to upgrade to the latest version of ThingWorx, you won’t be able to jump directly from 8.5 to 10.x, meaning you’ll have to upgrade to a lower version of 9.x and possibly install a few 9.x releases before upgrading to 10.x.  Refer to the ThingWorx Help Centers for guidance.  With each upgrade, you’ll need to regression test to validate everything continues to work properly.  It’s expected that you’ll need to upgrade any extensions and make changes to mashups, but keep in mind that some extensions may no longer exist.  That will require you to either purchase/create a replacement or make some design changes.

These are just a few things to look for while planning the upgrade.  Document your upgrade plan as you go through each step to minimize any surprises when you do it for real in prod.
