Anyone using Managed Baseline Subtype(s) to Differentiate Between Baseline Types?

Curious if anyone is using subtypes of Managed Baseline in Windchill? 

 

As configured today, any user can create a Baseline in our system. We are considering making a few new subtypes that have access policies applied to them. The idea is that a Configuration Management (CM) or Product Development Process (PDP) baseline can only be created by a select few and are documented in our business processes. This would help move the Baseline creation from a nice to have item, to a need to have item that is created in a consistent manner according to CM decisions and our PDP. 

 

I have a second request coming from the sourcing team that would like to create a Baseline once/week so they have a historical check point to determine if there have been any updates in a product structure. They need to know if anything has changed from the top level down to ensure they are forecasting and costing all the right components.

    We use baseline subtypes too for managing different types of releases. It makes it easier to control access, workflows, etc. It's also helpful for reporting changes.

     

    We had 1 gotcha a long time ago that I can't quite remember. I think it was something to do with being unable to import from spreadsheet if the main managed baseline type was not instantiable. I forget if we implemented a workaround ourselves, or if a newer version of Windchill resolved it for us. We currently have the main type not instantiable, and we are using several different subtypes.

    Our customers uses a lot the subtype of baselines. 

    In the first point there is necessary say if anyone can create it or not.

    If not then the ACL rules needs to be moved from top baseline type to lower types.

     

    You can imagine baselines types as a Print Baseline, Customer share baseline, Document Deliver Baseline, Prototype baseline, Release baseline and so on.

     

    Many operations with creating and maintaining the baseline can be automated.
