Managing As-built BOM - Part Instances

Currently, while we do note parts as being serialized or not, we do not make use of Part Instances. So there is no representation of a serialized part and Change Notice releases just represent idealized releases from Engineering which are sent to SAP. SAP should contain the data to answer the question what is the as-built structure (based on production orders and issued parts). I am thinking of pulling this back to the PLM side. Anyone have experience in trying to manage this on the PLM end? 

I can foresee a nightmare to keep this data in sync to decisions on the floor and outside of PLM. The goal is to accurate but not force extra overhead on folks building products and making those incorporation decisions. From what I know, this means making incorporation decisions at the change notice to declare effectivity of changes to upper level serialized instances and end items. Is that correct? What happens if as I expect, people change their minds later. Is this just altered or are there other steps necessary? Any good presentations on this topic?

Having never tried a Part Instance, I was thinking Windchill effectivity required a part version to apply the effectivity to. Regardless of whether the type of effectivity is a serial number, date or MSN, the effectively can only apply to a part version. This means, in our use case, that every build variation would be an revised top-level part in the product structure, so the build standard would sent down to ERP after they built it, which would be totally backwards for us.

 

In some cases the customers need us record as-built details in the design data, e.g. a concession/permit that affected performance, in those cases we were advised to use a one-off version of the assembly containing the affected part - and make changes to the one-off to reflect whatever as-built variations there are in that instance.

    UI is a bit obsolete but concept didn't changed.
