Question

Operating Principle Suggested Value List Constraint

Version: Windchill 12.0

Use Case: I want to use the Suggested Value List constraint in PartsLink. From the title, I understand it as a list of values (LOV) that can also be filled with free text if needed—a suggested selection that users can refer to, but with the flexibility to enter their own values. My goal is to assign this to attributes to give users more freedom in some cases, while still providing guidance with a predefined list they can use as a reference.

Description:

Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding Suggested Value Lists in the Parts Link module. When I add this constraint to an attribute, I would expect—based on the name—that I get a selection similar to a Legal Value List, but with the option for users to add new values themselves.
That’s how I interpret “Suggested Value List,” but it doesn’t seem to work that way for me. When I set it up in the constraint, I provide a LOV, which I can select from, but I can’t add anything myself.
Can anyone explain how Suggested Value Lists are actually intended to work, or share a link to documentation that clearly describes their purpose? I just found this basic info page explanation:
Provides a set of suggested values for the attribute.
Enter multiple values in the text field, separated by the pipe character ( | ), or click the edit icon next to the text field to open the Edit Constraint window.
For the string data type, if the suggested value list specified is abc|cde|efg, then the suggested values for the attribute are abc, cde, or efg.
To me, it just looks like a LOV and nothing more.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Suggested Value lists are only suggestions, user cannot enter their own values, but has to pick from the suggestion. It is not like what you think(and the standard UI understanding / expectation), unfortunately.

Basically new values are not allowed from the user entry point of view.

The exception to this on where I have seen is only the Insert Part in a structure>uses tab. Here you can enter partial part nos and windchill will suggest matching part nos, if nothing is matching it offers you to create that part.

Hope my response helps!

bet regards
