PLM Server requirements

Hello,

 

We are in the process of purchasing a new server for the Windchill PLM system. While determining server requirements, we are torn between Windows and Linux as the operating system. Currently, no company in our country has installed a PLM system on Linux. Since we have no experience in this area, we are struggling to make a decision. Is there any company that has installed a PLM system on Linux? If so, could you help us understand the advantages and disadvantages of the PLM system between Windows and Linux operating systems?

Hi @fatihsimsek 

Linux is very stable system. but if you need to use server side visualization worker, then you need an another machine where the Creo is installed and Creo can be installed only on the Windows as far as I know :D. 

So you do not avoid to by Windows license.

    We have a mix but for PLM we use Linux. Agree that its been simple and rock stable for us. However, if you support staff has no experience and are the ones supporting the server, then you have to factor maintenance into your decision. Just linking to top google search here:

    For PLM, I would look at it as a large webapp.

      I would echo what @avillanueva has said. It doesn't matter which platform is better; if you are going to be unable to support it. If you don't have expertise in a particular OS, I would not advise placing a PLM system on it. I regularly support both and see pros and cons of each. But when asked which to go with, I always stress the importance of maintaining the system.

        Hello there,

        Adding my incremental view points...

        I would lay these questions on the table to assess the feasibility.,

        1. Are there any business application that already is mounted on Linux in your Org?

         

        2. The cost of a linux supporting box vs Windows Box , this when compared to your budget?

         

        3. Your forecasted user growth ?

         

        4. Your organization's general IT guideline and long term picture for application hosting?

         

        5. Your cloud plan? (If any).

         

        6. Are you already running a PLM system?

         If no, then the Organization change management itself can be a engaging factor for your IT dept and thus they need to go with the option they are comfortable in (Windows).

         

        Technically, when organization have large users, they will eventually move to cloud or Linux on prem. But when your PLM program is in nascent stage with less users, Windows can be your stop gap bridge.
