Whats the best practice to handle the spare parts in 3D model and Windchill?

For an example:

if our product is vehicle, for most times , there are four normal tires on the car.

But sometimes, customer also need winter tires .

Our engineer normally assembly both two types of tires in the main 3D model.

And create 2 simplified representation: normal tires representation and  winder tires representation to distinguish the 3D model and make assembly drawings.

Its clear in drawings and 3D model.

but its not very clear in windchill BOM,

because the winter tires and normal tires are in same level of BOM.

So would you know a better way to make 3D model or BOM?

Or what`s the best practice for this kind of situation?

Thanks in advance!

ps. its just an example. we are not an automobile company, but our problem is same.

We put both options in the BOM and then add a flag note saying that either option may be installed.

I am sure there are more sophisticated methods to handle this.

I do know one company that builds each model of their engine with the options for used in it. It creates a nice package as you get all of the components for the engine you order. The issue came down to ordering slightly different configurations and then getting multiple CAD models of the same part. We were a manufacturer who bought the engines and got the CAD models for installation in our frames, etc.
