Windchill 10.2 Staffing documentation

Is there a “PTC or Industry recommendation” of how many Business and/or System Administrators compared to the amount of users?

We are planning to consolidate five separate Windchill systems into one. Currently we have a limited staff for approximately 600 users. The amount of users will triple once the consolidation occurs, and within the next 2 years, the projection is doubling those numbers.

It is my task to find out how many bodies will be needed to support a system of this size.

Many many MANY years ago I had a “rule of thumb” staffing documentation (concerning Intralink then Windchill) but I can’t find anything current.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

    Could you perhaps share what you are considering "limited staff" for approximately 600 users?

    How many do you really need? If the system is up and running with only upgrades planned for the future, you could get by with a couple of SA and BA people and a DBA. The DBA could be shared with other applications of thd DB. If your IT group takes care of the hardware and system backups, that reduces a lot of your SA load.

    If you are in a developing or customizing environment, then you may need some additional resources, notably programmers to do the customizations.

    What do you see as the needs are for SA/BA people? What tasks will they be performing on a daily/weekly basis that would require multiple people?

    While you're integrating multiple systems and increasing the user base, I would expect you would need more BAs to help. Regardless of the system, there is usually a fair amount of work involved in mapping the existing data into a new system. We have ~300 active users, and 1.5 BA and 1 SA (me). We are looking to add another BA, as in addition to upgrading the system (and figuring out how we want to change how we do work to take advantage of the new features), we are actively looking to bring in new user groups, who will need a lot of education (in terms of what Windchill is, how it works, what it can do, etc) and support to map their data and process into the system (and hopefully improve the processes along the way), Our BAs are also actively involved with developing standards, developing training, and long range planning. IMHO the right number of BAs will ultimately depend on what you want them to take on.

    An additional SA would give you someone to focus on the integration work while your normal SA handles maintenance and upgrades. I would like another person (or half a person) to do some of the daily work, while I work on the upgrade from PDMLink 9.1 to 10.2. Again, that will depend a lot on your environment - ours tends to be fairly prescriptive. Between vulnerability management, security patches, and keeping up with the requirements from IT and security, time to do development work is limited.
