Question

Workspace Corruption

Hi all,

I am running WC 10.1 M020 with Creo/Elements Pro M160. Weare having major workspace corruption issues. Some users have to delete their local cache a couple of times a week due to workspace corruption as this seems to be the only thing that will allow them to access their workspace. We also see ProE crash often when trying to synchronize the workspace from the workspace browser. The issues seem prevalent to almost all users but some are worse than others. Is there anything that I can check or do that might help. The issues seem random but are happening daily. Just this week we have probably had the issue 20 times.

Thanks,

Brian

I agree with Daniel. Maybe we should do something this is absolutely unacceptable.

We've seen issues like this since migrating to Windchill too. Many things we've done have lessened the frequency of corrupt workspace cache and other Windchill problems, but we still get them. Isn't it fun using a web application? Client server applications look appealing now!

->Set workspace cache location with Creo startup script.

->Turn off on-access virus scanning in cache locations.

->Change workspace cache location with each Creo and/or Windchill upgrade.

->Teach users to clear web browser cache on a regular basis.

->Add lines to Creo startup script to clear locations like: AppData\roaming\PTC\.ptcm1912

->Create scripts users can run to delete various temp directories like Java cache areas when they have Windchill issues.

->Teach users to upload/check-in on a regular basis. Make them expect their local workspace cache to be destroyed any time.

->Teach users to keep their workspaces clean, without any unnecessary files.

->Keep up with all OS/Web Browser/Java/Windchill/Creo patches, maintenance releases ...etc.

->Teach users not to use the Workgroup Managers for uploading/downloading WTDocuments, especially with Java, use stand alone browsers for Documents.

->Give users access to multiple web browsers for general Windchill use (IE9, Chrome, Firefox).

I'm sure others have more tips.

This is very normal. Just start over.

You would think that the solution is to some how magically quickly get back
your workspace. Nope.
Just chuck it up to PTC's inability to provide a fully functioning software
and move on with your life.
Wanna learn java/c++ and the jlink/tool kit interfaces to Cro/e then by all
means spend a few days "trying to figure it out"
Now a days, I just go to the user's workspace, wipe out the old one and
tell them to start over.
Its not science that you are trying to discover, its some bug in the
software that is not worth enough mula to fix.
Not for intralink 3.4, pdmlink8,9,or10 and not for the next 10 revisions of
it.

Wow, I guess that all of us have these type of issues and respond in different ways.
This has been a GREAT Friday topic for everyone to vent about. Have a nice weekend all ..... 🙂

Does anyone yet have steps to reproduce the issue consistently?

Morning all, I’m late to this thread and I work with 9.1. Has anyone looked into network connectivity as the cause of corruption. I have anecdotal evidence of users who have been experiencing slow network speeds (Increased Traffic?) and subsequent corrupted Local Cache. My response is to rename the local cache and create new Pro/ Creo server.

Not sure if this is directly related to the thread.

Thanks,

I suspect network connectivity issues and server issues (a dropped MethodServer for example) do lead to WS cache issues.

I think we might have one use-case that causes the issue (I’ll have to ask a co-worker) but this would fit only the minority of cases we’ve seen. It would certainly be nice if we could narrow this to a common root cause.

Same problem here with workspaces. Running WF4 m210 and Intralink 10.0
m030.

The problem is intermittent (happens at random times) yet consistent
(happens regularly).

A related problem is that some users lose connectivity to the Windchill
server (i.e. placed into Offline Mode). One user is off Windchill more
than he is on. This is odd because other users are communicating with
the Windchill server just fine at the same moment the one user is placed
into Offline Mode. [I am working a support call with PTC regarding this
particular user.]

A survey of the landscape here seems to suggest that the Win7 64-bit
workstations encounter the problem most frequently. Since most (all?)
users here do not know how to change their Embedded Browser to be
anything other than IE, everyone is on IE -- though some users do have
Firefox or Chrome running as their primary browser for normal web
browsing.

Has anyone seen a tendency for their Win7 users to have problems but not
their WinXP users?

I personally have a WinXP 64-bit system running IE 8 and I do not
experience any workspace issues.

Also, accessing cache via multiple sessions of CEPW5 seems to be a source of corruption as well. But I think that’s a known issue.

We've been on Windchill PDMLink 10 M030 & Wildfire 4 M210/220 for a little over three months. We've experienced three workspace corruptions in that time (~36 users) and all have seemed related to user session to server communication issues. I've been tempted to turn on the auto-upload-on-save option in Pro/E, but am curious about this: How many of you seeing chronic issues with workspace corruption have the auto-upload turned on? If you didn't have it on before, have you had an increase in workspace corruption since? Do corruptions seem to occur at totally random times of day or is it more typical when there would be a spike in user session to server chatter (start of day, after returning from lunch, end of day)?
