Question

Applying Pre-load to pressure enclosure end caps

I am trying to apply preloads to parts that make up a pressure enclosure assembly. We screw the endcaps to the main enclosure and then apply 120Nm as the preload torque. I have tried to simulate this by applying Force/moment Load with a component moment of 120Nm around the Z axis which is parallel with the length of enclosure. Is there anyway of transfering the 120Nm along the axis at the same time, this would then apply the correct loads to the component mating faces?

regards

Geoff

Are you sure that this would give the "correct loads"?

A large part of the torque is probably lost due to friction in the threads.

So it may be better to just do a hand calculation to see which pretension load you actually end up with in the contact.
