"Copy Geometry" grayed out

I am trying to use "Copy Geometry" in a part model to copy over some curves from one model to another. This would allow me to match up my parts to each other and if the first part is modified, the second part that is based on the copied geometry would be automatically adjusted.

It used to be easy to do this in Wildfire 4.0, but it has been a while since I have used the software. At my new job we just got Creo 1.0 and the "Copy Geometry" icon/button is always grayed out so I can't select it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Doug...

I just went into Creo 1.0 and tested this. From the Model tab, Copy Geometry was lit up in both assembly mode and part mode. While it's true that you can access the command from assembly mode, you should be able to perform an External Copy Geometry feature within a part without an assembly.

My suggestion would be that if this option is always greyed out at your new job, you do not have a license of Pro/E that can use the feature. As David said above, you'll need the "AAX" (Advanced Assembly Extension) add-on license or a full-featured license that already includes this extension.

Sometimes companies have more than one license type available. Often companies will have a couple of "high-end" licenses and then a few lower end licenses without advanced features.

If you go to File>Help>System Information, you'll see all the modules available for use. Your company may have an AAX license available as a "floating license". To look for this, go to File>Options>Licensing and select "Refresh License List" in the TOP portion of the screen (in the Floating Modules) section. You may get lucky and see an Advanced Assembly license in there. If not, I'd suggest talking to your Pro/E Administrator or whomever controls the purchasing of your Pro/E seats.

This got me too. The way to do it is within the context of an assembly. Just activate the part which you want to copy the geometry into, select the geometry and then ctrl+c ctrl+v, or use the menus that you mentioned.

In order to copy from one part to another without an assembly, formerly called Shared Geometry, you need the Advanced Assembly add-on.

    Thank you both Brian and David. You are both correct that I do not have the Advanced Assembly Extension, which is leaving that one option grayed out. At my past job, we had every module of everything and I didn't have to worry about anything. Now I am the only one and just bought one seat, so I guess I am the administrator. Now I have to either work around this issue or try to get my boss to spend more money on the extension.

    Hi Doug...

    Without AAX you might be able to make use of the shrinkwrap functionality. I haven't checked in Creo 1.0 but in previous revisions of Pro/E, even when Copy Geometry was not available (due to licensing restrictions), you could still use the Shrinkwrap features. In a pinch you can use shrinkwraps to mimic most of the same functions as Copy Geometry. There are some caveats and twists to this which are a bit beyond what I could cover in an email... but look into it.

    You MAY be able to do an EXTERNAL shrinkwrap to copy the curves from one model to another. I'm not sure if the "external" type shrinkwraps are available without AAX though. Regular shrinkwraps should be available. I don't have a way to remove the AAX extension from my license to test this for you so you'll have to investigate a bit on your own.

    If you DO have the shrinkwrap button and CAN set the type to external, you're probably home free. If you need help navigating the menus to create the curve copies using the shrinkwrap feature, let me know.
