Question

How to open external reference files automatically

This was originally raised in Ketan Lalcheta's post on "External Reference".

When a part with feature(s) created in the context of other assembly is retrieved, the referenced assembly will NOT be brought into session automatically. Unlike data sharing features, the referenced parts could be retrieved automatically by setting the configuration parameters.

Attached here is the example from Ketan. PRT0001 has its hole feature created in ASM0001.asm. When PRT0001 is opened in part mode, ASM0001.asm will NOT be retrieved automatically.

Any workaround?  Thanks in advance for your tips.

This is a workaround of sorts. It is better then nothing. Watch the enclosed video.

P.S.

I would caution one regarding assembly features, there are reasons for using them. More often than not when I encounter them they are creating undesirable external references that do not capture design intent. One can easily create a lot of external references very fast by using assembly features that only affect a single component within the assembly. If the feature only modifies a single component within the assembly then you should really consider if that is the best method to capture the design intent.
