Modeling with VSS

Fellow users


Please help me model the attached drawing. I am perplexed how to match the acorn appearance in the front view. My attemp to using Variable section sweep didnt give the results wanted

VSS is not your best method for that one. The "point" at the bottom of the inverted pyramid will be problematic with a VSS.


You are better off creating 3 element boundary surfaces for each pyramid. A bit more laborious to create the first time but really robust to changes later on.

I think that I would build the acorn by adding material via sweeping
triangle sections normal to the bottom face along curves that represent
the peaks of the acorn, each set swept at 90 degrees to the other.

The alternative is to build it up from edges - edges into surfaces -
surfaces into one big mesh and solidify the whole bunch of it. You'd
only need a quarter and then mirror twice.

If Pro/E had an XOR function that could be used...

How are you implying the XOR function with regard to Pro in your post?

Sadly, PTC does not have most of the constructive solid geometry
functions like XOR (eXclusive OR) which would allow creating interesting
features.

In word form - XOR (ABC, CDE) = ABDE. In solid terms this would mean,
remove the material only where two features overlap. PTC supports
OR(ABC, CDE) = ABCDE and SUBTRACT(ABC, CDE) = AB.

Another function that would be handy is -ABC, so that ADD (-ABC, CDE) =
DE. This would allow creating (for example) a hole pattern which would
always remove material from subsequent features, ensuring that, no
matter what, the holes would be there.

I believe Pro/E calls this existing functionality "through all" and "reorder"

Thanks, but It isn't existing functionality. The key word is "subsequent."

The idea is to have top-down design control without having to manage
feature order.
