PDF drawing export: output special characters as coded text characters?

If I export a drawing as a pdf file, all letters are coded in TrueType format, except special characters such as the diameter symbol. Is it possible to include these characters/symbols in any way, e. g. by changing the font (arial) or specify an assignment?

My aim is to read out the drawing entries from the pdf automatically by software.
