STEP Export - Over-ride with explicit user defined names

I need to import several STEP files exported from PTC Creo.

Currently all imported objects have a very long name similar to this:
63BA2014C78DEC881B086CFF8F77897FA0C680C8|:|B8A4396250C5687B1D31E70758B30729E1AC4426

I did find this option "Over-ride with explicit user defined names" in the manual here:
https://support.ptc.com/help/creo/creo_pma/r11.0/usascii/index.html#page/data_exchange/interface/step_export_profile_and_config_options.html#

I assume that would give me actual names when importing. Unfortunately I did not find any information on how to set user-defined names inside Creo. Any information on how to do this would really help me. Thanks

Explanation of that option for STEP interface.

  • This option will export surfaces and edges with user defined names

Article - CS322743 - What is the option Over-ride with explicit user defined names when exporting a STEP file in Creo Parametric (ptc.com)

Thanks for this link. Unfortunately it did not affect the import. However I can see the surface and edge names when I open the *.STP file with a text editor.

Are these STEP files assemblies? And are the problem names coming from components within the assemblies?

If you're importing single STEP files, can't you just rename the files? Or, when you import them, you are given the option of telling Creo what file name you want for the imported data.

Once you've read in a part/assembly, you can always use the File->Manage File->Rename functionality of the interface.

The "name" example you gave looks more like hexadecimal encoding to me. Maybe something that was created by a program?

Hi thanks for your reply. The Scene type is "Part" and the Sub-Type is "Solid".
Considering that setting names includes setting 'Parameters' or similar cumbersome solutions, it appears to be much easier to go through all objects after importing and rename them again.

I tried a few things but it didn't decode to a readable string.
It might just be that 3dsmax is giving each object a UID as a filename and it cannot be changed.
