Improving file sharing in Mathcad

One of the things that has always been a feature of these forums is the willingness of experienced users to provide help and guidance to others.  In addition to help with how to use the Mathcad software the forums provide a place to gain advice and assistance with dealing with engineering challenges, problems that go beyond the simple application of the software to understanding the basic physics of a situation.

One remaining impediment to this  feature is the inability of Prime to save a file in an earlier version of Prime; a file asking a question in Prime 10 can be read in Prime 11 or 12 but if this file is modified and saved by a later version and posted as a reply it cannot be opened unless you have a more current version of the software.

This is a great marketing tool--”Here’s your answer.  To view it you must buy the latest version of the software!”   But it’s a lousy way to share information.  The forum is littered with requests to modify a file to enable a specific version to be read.  And there are a number of posts outlining methods to alter files (not using Mathcad) to enable changing what level the file is.

So the question:  Will PTC ever allow a version of Mathcad Prime to save a file in an earlier version of Prime?

Did you mean for this to be in the Ask Me Anything board?

PTC Marketer for Creo and Mathcad. I run their YouTube channels, some Creo campaigns, and all Mathcad campaigns and communications.

Yes, that’s where I thought I put it.

It’s going to take a bit to learn how to navigate this new organization.

Hi Fred,

When I first joined the Mathcad team at PTC back in 2010, I believe I did have one or two conversations with you with Mona or sone of the other team members at the time - thank you for the feedback you provide on this forum.

We do get asked about saving worksheets in older formats, and I can see the benefit for the workflow you describe.

Each new version of Mathcad Prime contains new structures, and updates to the equation control, and sometimes changes to the equation control that would make going back incompatible. And as Mathcad Prime isn’t that onerous to update to the newest version, enterprises typically update soon after a new release is available.

For full compatibility, we would have needed to have designed Prime 1 to manage newer worksheets from the start - for example, we could do something in the next release but that would only really help users of the release after to open in that release.

However, if the problem you want to solve is fixing people's math and providing them the updated worksheet, it may be easier, if we’re restricted to just the math, to provide something where a worksheet can be saved in a compatibility (math and text only) mode and opened in a previous version. Outside of math (and text), what other structures in the worksheet do you think would be common enough to need to be included in this kind of backward compatibility?

Many thanks,

Andy.

Andy,

Your experience and mine have been somewhat different.

“And as Mathcad Prime isn’t that onerous to update to the newest version, enterprises typically update soon after a new release is available.”

The “enterprise” I worked for did not ever readily upgrade its software, it usually required multiple requests, reminders, and cajoling to get a newer version of Mathcad purchased; then a second round of begging to have it installed on my computer. The result was that I often had a later version of Mathcad on my computer than other users.  (This was early in the process, when I was still advocating for Mathcad and the rest of the world was using other programs.)  So given a file to troubleshoot, I would find a problem to correct that (usually) did not require the “new features” to solve.  ONLY by saving the corrected file back to the older version could I provide the solution.  That was the “old” version of Mathcad, not Prime.

The other problem with the current practice of updating Prime annually is that the computer is cluttered with multiple versions; to correct an earlier version file it must be opened with that version or saving it would result in a corrected file that is totally useless to the original supplicant.

This practice, while very appealing to your accountants, is very aggravating to your users!
