Planet PTC Event

So, each year I look for ways to get myself to the PTC/User event. (I
usually need to get a paper approved to have a chance.) I'm usually
pretty interested in going and learning and meeting other users.

This year, however, with the switch to a PTC run event, I'm feeling no
desire at all to go. Looking at the call for papers page [1], it seems
primarily devoted to PLM and management, not to the Pro/E user in the
trenches. Big picture, enterprise level ideas seem to dominate and the
nitty gritty 'how do I get Pro/E to do ___" or "how to use Pro/E for
____" seem to be taking on a lesser role. I get the impression that I'd
find it hard to fill my schedule with relevant presentations.

Any other users feeling rather uninspired by the event this year?

    Good post Doug.

    I have the same fears. All we can hope for is that the organizers will
    give as much time to expert user presentations as in past events. They
    will be fools if they do not. I have submitted my proposal already and
    hope that when the agenda is announced, it will be like previous years
    and have more topics than I have time to attend.

    With the amount of unknowns this year they would do well to publish
    info sooner rather than later, which I will give them credit for they
    seem to be doing, as evidenced by the schedules for submitting and
    approving presentations is months earlier than past years.

    Keeping my fingers crossed that those at PTC and PTC/USER do not
    forget what makes these conferences successful.

    Last time I presented was in Dallas at the 1999 Conference.

    Doug,

    I'm sorry you feel this way about the event, hopefully some
    clarification will help.



    PTC is taking over the running of the event- from an event planning and
    logistics standpoint only. There are really no changes from the content
    side; paper vetting and selection will follow the same process as in
    past conferences with PTC/USER running the selection process.



    In terms of paper categories - both "The Future of CAD and PLM" and "The
    World According to PTC Users" will take the lion's share of Pro/E
    abstracts.



    I strongly encourage the community to submit abstracts - for many (if
    not most ) of the users the value of the event comes from this user
    generated content.

    John,

    Thanks for your response. I certainly didn't intend to discourage
    anyone from attending or submitting an abstract. I was simply
    expressing the change in my interest in the event and wondering why out
    loud.

    As far as there being no changes to the content part of the event, that
    may well be true. But, the way the event is being promoted *feels* more
    like PTC marketing than a user oriented and driven event. It's
    certainly hard, if not impossible, to quantify, but my impression is
    that the overall topics are more geared to PTCs marketing priorities
    than the communities. Actually, I guess if I was honest, it doesn't
    seem to align with *my* priorities as a Pro/E user. I guess I need to
    remind myself that PTC is bigger than Pro/E these days.

    That was one of the reasons for my post, frankly, was to see if it was
    just me that was feeling this way. So far, there doesn't seem to be
    widespread agreement, so I seem to be in the minority.

    Here's my response to a similar question on the Windchill list this morning.....

    I don't think this looks much different than in years past. PTC User had always suggested topics. The one thing I don't see is a "theme" as in years past.

    If you look at the instructions to presenters on the submission page, it looks like they want the same kind of presentations as always. (although someone needs to spell check it.)

    Of specific interest are in-depth customer case studies and related sessions that demonstrate the successful application of PTC solutions in real-world scenarios that empower other users to drive value and efficiency at their organizations.
    Presenters may choose from several session formats and industry topics that represent the greatest areas of interest for PTC customers. Presentations can address any or all members of the PTC product suite, as well as user experience level and job role.

    NOT AT ALL DOUG! I too have misgivings on direction for the old tired and true Pro/USER conference focus. Ya I guess that flags me as an old dog. Wasn't there something at the "old" conferences, somewhere between the financial disclosure and enhancement voting for every member, about being A.U.T.O.N.O.M.O.U.S. ? I'm withholding final opinion until after the event's dust settles.

    The organization has always been (and I quote the web site):







    I queried on several occasion and have not got a response from any of
    the board members on how PTC running the conference reconciles with us
    being the "Independent Voice"....



    I have great respect for our Board members and the effort they put in to
    keep PTC/User running. And I know I don't have all the information, but
    it's hard not to judge after 6 months of no clarification of the
    decision.

    Doug, I understand the confusion...mainly my fault for being distracted with my work responsibilities and heavy international travel.  PTC/USER has been fully engaged in this process and fully supports the event in 2011 as we have for the past 20 plus years. I and other PTC/USER BOD members have been on every PlanetPTC Live call to develop the call for proposals.   Please reference my recent blog article on this subject.
