Default text box size

I'd like to see the default text box size ba only a fwe chars. Often I want to embed a small text box, but it is so large that I cannot activate the resize (button?). So I drag the text box to a free part of the doc, resize the box, and drag it back.

edit 20120714: OK, so what is the name of the 3 dot button that we use to resize regions? 3db?
