Hexagonal packing

Would anyone be able to start me off with creating a graphic showing 6 hexagonally packed objects (described by gaussians).

I would like to be able to change the FWHM of the gaussian, and the separtion of the objects and then determine the overlap of the objects.

By hexagonal packing, you mean :
a Mathcad chain saw of 5 crosswise cuts for 6 logs.
