There are good bottom-up techniques to build manageable large assemblies from the get-go, but what do you do when  handed a task and a dataset from a less-than-diligent modeler? How do you square away a problem dataset without remodeling the whole thing? What if it’s gotten so large, you can’t even open it?  In this session, the presenter shared some outside-the-box tricks for manipulating large datasets, getting them back into shape and efficiently usable. The presenter touched on config.pro options and standard techniques every large assembly modeler should employ. Attendees learned about creative uses of the model tree, layer management, feature redefinition, trail file scrutiny, and vendor model reconfiguration. And how these techniques  allow modelers to speed up a dataset’s retrieval and manipulation, and get productivity back on track.

Product information on a data level is often managed by many different disciplines in a manufacturing company. Marketing looks after Data sheets, R&D has their own data set of product attributes and so on. The information is often stored in different databases or at worst just as a text string in a document. The challenge is with growing product portfolios, increased regulations and large organizations, to manage this data-set in a single source environment and to be re-used in all depending documentation. This session will present a possible way to solve the problem using XML and CMS as a single source using different layers of authoring to allow the whole organization to contribute. Hi everyone, my name is Geoffrey Baxter. I'm a 12-year PTC veteran and resident of the greater Houston metro area. I, along with Tim Cooper, will be leading the Greater Houston PTC User Group. How can I make modifications to an existing BOM table? I have a long list of part for an assembly and I have to keep adding parts as I go forward. I have used paginate to split the table into 2 separate tables on page 1 of my drawing. The problem is that when I add more parts the table will add the parts to the second page. If I add a segment to the first page of the BOM it adds the segment as a separate table and won't connect it to the original table. How do I expand the table and keep it as a complete segment instead of a bunch of little separate segments? What is the best way to keep making modifications to a BOM table on an existing drawing?

There are many situations where documents need to incorporate information stored in a database. A simple approach is to generate a report of the data from the database, and then copy and paste the data into the document. Unfortunately, that approach tends to be labor-intensive and error-prone, and can easily lead to out-of-sync documents if the database is updated but the document is not.   To make the process of embedding data in documents easier, Arbortext Editor and Publishing Engine support Data Merge, a framework for embedding data queries in your documents and for formatting the data results for publishing.   Data merge lets you set up query types tailored to your database. When a query is inserted into a document, it pulls current data from the database to complete the document. Legal publishing uses a lot of attributes, and CCH publications are some of the richest legal reporting available. When we converted to SGML nine years ago, one of the first things our users requested was a way to modify attributes globally outside the Arbortext Editor Modify Attributes dialog. Often they have been required to open XML files in Notepad, or Edit as XML Source to change attributes in large files, which led to error and was very time-consuming. The project got on the schedule in 2007, and we started the initial analysis, starting with what language to write the tool in, and how to create the interface.   Because this tool requires a good deal of querying the DTD, we decided to write it in ACL. The interface requirements included making it impossible for a user to create invalid XML. For example, the tool needed to remove #FIXED attributes from the attribute list, and, if the user wanted to delete attribute values, the tool needed to remove #REQUIRED attributes from t
