Move files between Contexts

What is the best way to move a large number of files from on context to another, thousands of files.

Please don't ask why we want to do this, let's just assume we have a good reason.

I have tried the standard GUI methods such as "Cut & Paste" and "Move" but find these very time consuming and I am not sure I can trust them for thousands of files.

Any idea on a command line approach or Oracle ?

Why would you want to do that?



Are these files easily groupable? I move data right from the search
page all the time. You have the option then of moving just that data or
all related data.



If its structure, find the highest item and move that, then use the
collector to grab the related data.



Use multiple browsers to run them in parallel.



You can also try grouping them ahead of time in a folder first then
select from the folders page and move them. It can take a lot of time
but most of that is waiting for PDMlink to finish.

Does it make sense to rename the context, adjust team members and move less
files to a new context? Just thought I'd throw the towel out there?

Have you looked at doing this with a Move-Obects webject?


You could create an Info*Engine task with two webjects.


a Query-Obects webject to find th eobjects to be moved


then you would pass the Object IDs from the output of the Query-Objects webject to the Move-Obects webect.


The Move-Obects webect would then do the move.



Also keep in mind you can move the folder object that your obects are in. That might be a quick way to do this.

You may need to buy info*engine licenses for every Windchill license if you want to utilize info*engine programming...not 100% sure, but I think PTC requires. it...

Just a minor point, never touch the Oracle data under a Windchill system without PTCs go ahead, you must go through the API (an even then with caution) the complexity of the data model is such that you can do irreversible damage.

Info*engine is licensed by individual

You only need to pay additional money for info*engine if you are using info*engine to connect to external systems other than Windchill. So if you are using it to move files in Windchill, that is fine. If you are using it to take data from Windchill and then put that data into an ERP system, for example, that is when you will need to purchase the info*engine license. It's also a requirement for ESI besides the ESI license, that's not well advertised and will add unexpected cost.

Has anyone received a good answer as to why there is that per user cost?
Are we paying a vig back to the people PTC bought InfoEngine from?
