OIR Custom Java Class

I was told that it was possible to use a custom Java class in place of the "algorithm" attribute in an OIR to execute custom logic. Has anyone ever done this? I want to know if it's possible to detect if a drawing EPM Document is being created versus other types of EPM Documents.
