Should/could drawing use latest CAD template on revise?

Hi all,

 

there's a requirement to update general/legal texts in drawings. One option is to implement changes when drawing is revised. I tested making a new iteration for the CAD Template and enabled it. However, when revising a drawing the new revision does not use the new template. Should it?

 

New CAD Document opens the new template as expected.

 

The latest iteration of the template is in state Design (In Work, ie. not Approved / Released) but so was the previous.

It's checked-in with a non-admin user.

Templates (of any kind) are only used when creating a new object.  The template is physically copied to the new object, not much different than if you had simply done a save-as on the template model.  It is not possible to reapply a template to an existing model.

 

For drawings you can update the format that the drawings are using.  If you are automatically retrieving "latest" of everything in Creo (the default behavior), then anytime you open a drawing the latest version of the format will automatically come with it.  Any changes to the format, except for tables, will immediately become visible in any drawings that load it.

 

Keep in mind that Windchill is often configured to publish data "as stored".  That means changing a format and then publishing or republishing existing drawings in Windchill will not show the format changes.  The drawing would have to be opened and saved with the latest format in the workspace for the published representation to show the updated format.

    Ok, thanks for the confirmation of what was expected.

     

    Somewhat off topic,

    Like you state "templates (of any kind)" it is the case with wtPart too, you can't e.g. add attributes to existing objects? Except perhaps through classification.

    I was referring specifically to templates used with Creo Parametric.  I'm not sure how wtParts behave, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same.  Keep in mind that the presence of attributes in Windchill is controlled through the Type and Attribute manager.  It should be possible to define new attributes and have them automatically appear on all related Windchill objects, they just won't have any values assigned until the object is modified.
