I want to let users select a different unit for an attribute, like length. I want to allow them to determine the units of the attribute when creating/editing it. Is it possible?

Yes but the users need to change their own preference to allow this (as
of 9.1). The users can choose their measurement system from user
preferences but I think admin needs to define them. For example, our EE
users want to enter lengths for components in mils (that thousands of an
inch). I created a TGS measurement system which changes how the values
are entered and displayed to those users. System stores values in base
unit of measure and converts for each user.

For what it is worth, our users find this sensible feature to be difficult
to use when we have "metric parts" and "standard parts" such that the
measurement system is tied to the part, and not to the user. I wish that
was not the case, but it is - and it makes this units feature with
PartsLink very difficult for some of our users.

For example, .667 inch is always supposed to be displayed that way, not as
16.9418 mm. And 2 mm is not supposed to ever display as 0.0787 inches.
What our users say they want is to view .667 inch on the same page as a
different part that has 2 mm for the same dimension because one is
"metric" and the other isn't.

Does anyone else have that problem at their site?

We delivered an add on module for rendering the real numbers with units (on
the details UI) in smart units.



For an example, for volts



.001 v would be displayed as 1 mv

.01 v would be displayed as 10 mv

.1 v would be displayed as 100 mv

1 v would be displayed as 1 v

10 v would be displayed as 10 v

100 v would be displayed as 100 v

1000 v would be displayed as 1 kv

10000 v would be displayed as 10 kv

100000 v would be displayed as 100 kv

1000000 v would be displayed as 1 Mv



No exponentials, no fractions and very easily readable to human eyes.

I did just find that I can specify any acceptable unit in the attribute value. Ex. if I am set to USCS I can still enter 3m, that is all I really wanted.
