Wt.part vs. EPMDoc vs. others? Explanation / Documentation?

Can anyone point me to a good explanation or documentation defininjg the differences of these objects and their usage?


I have an idea in my mind, but I want to get the real scoop before I answer my uuser base.

    The Windchill Help Center has a topic, entitled Object Types, that provides a high-level definition of each object. There is also a Configuration and Change Management Overview that is intended as a conceptual overview of those functions of Windchill, and there is a quite a bit more information about parts to be found there. Getting to Work with Creo and Managing CAD Data (starting with Introduction to the Workspace) are good resources for information about CAD documents.

    Have always wondered what "EPM" stands for. Most places in the system labeled as "CAD" but not all and all the code says EPM.

      I believe it dates back to the late 1990s, and originally stood for
      "Engineering Process Management"

      EPM stands for "Enterprise Product Model".

        It would not surprise me if it was something like E.... Part Master, like
        Engineering Part Master or something. Really, the names that evolved for
        CAD and WTParts are so hopelessly confusing that it is tough to talk
        about them to a non-expert: part (PRT or WTPart?), assembly (ASM or
        WTPart with children?), drawing (DRW, WTDocument Drawing?), and wait until
        you try options and variants: a "configurable module, collapsible, not
        end item, not-gathering wtpart" has an owner link to a "Creo Configurable
        Product" even if the wtpart is an "assembly", while a "configurable
        module, not-collapsible, end item, not-gathering wtpart" has an owner link
        to a "Creo Configurable Module." And so on. Just talking to a non-expert
        is so confusing that we have created an internal "taxonomy" of terms that
        combine CAD and WTPart linked objects into "Part Packages" such that when
        we say "Configurable Assembly," for example, we are talking about a very
        specific set of attribute combinations on an owner-linked wtpart WITH its
        owner linked Creo Configurable Product object - the one term refers to
        both at the same time.
