WF 4 Interchange Assy

I switched out 2 parts in a couple of assemblies using and interchange assembly. I've done it 100's of times before. After switching out the parts, I cleaned them up by removing them from the interchange assy and once I got everything out of memory, and pulled up the parts again, I made sure they were clean by going into each of the parts and using EDIT SETUP INTERCHANGE REMOVE.

Everything should be clean. I regenerated both top level model with no errors. Great. All clean and fresh.

Well, I pulled up the drawing of the top level model and BAM, "Interchange assy cannot be retrieved". Any idea why the drawing is holding on to the interchange assemblies?

Just messed with it again and it's not the drawing, it still has a reference in the assemblies.

How do I break the interchange assyreference now?

Okay, so since I'm new to WF4, I thought "I remember something in update training about reference viewer".

I went to info /reference viewer / clicked on the filter to let me see dependents. It showed the interchange assy. I right clicked on it and wah-lah, there is a BREAK REFERENCE pick. I tried it. It seems to work.

So, what is it doing? I really hate commands that do "magic". I like to feel as though I am smarter than the software and that I am in control. I absolutely don't feel that way using this command.

Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful to do something like that, it just seems a little "to good to be true" sort of thing, ya know??!!??

Hi Steve,

I feel a bit obligated to chime in since I was on the TC Focus group that wrote the whitepaper for this functionality. Hopefully my co-conspirators will chime if I miss anything.

The two things I know that can be broken are references for Interchange features and Declared Layouts.

I don't disagree that this functionality seems like a bit of "magic". Unfortunately, despite the original intent of the Global Reference Viewer Whitepaper, this is the only place in the Reference Viewer that you can actually do something besides just look at stuff.

Thanks Joshua, it looks nice, but it doesn't explain what is happening in the background. My theory, skewed though it may be, is that pro/e is logically saying there is a relationship. And I agree, I made a relationship. In the past, I thought I broke that relationship by going through a process off deleting the interchange stuff. But this time, pro/e and intralink still said I had a relationship. I don't know how to break it.

In fact, I used the "break relationship" button, and it went away according to the reference viewer. A few minutes later, I tried to redefine the part that was used in the interchange and it gave me the following ominous message:

To redefine the part, I have to restore the dependency.

So, in essence, "break relationship" is more like "obscure relationship" so that pro/e and Intralink doesn't try to pull that into memory, but it's still lurking.

I still don't know how to DELETE the relationship of the interchange assy. It's taunting me and the voices in my head are telling me it's the monitor that is conspiring against me.
