Grateful for thunderstorms this morning - we had been in a severe drought. Farmers around here will be happy (if things didn't wash away to much).     A Herd of Buffalo A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole keeps improving by the regular culling of the weakest members.   In much the same way, the human brain can operate only as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills off brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. One of these is a guy named (really) George Goble, a computer person in the Purdue University engineering department. Each year, Goble and a bunch of other engineers hold a picnic in West Lafayette, Indiana, at which they cook hamburgers on a big grill. Being engineers, they began looking for practical ways to speed up the charcoal-lighting process. "We started by blowing the charcoal with a hair dryer," Goble told me in a telephone interview "Then we figured out that it would light faster if we used a vacuum cleaner." You open them up and everything inside is numbered."   The second said, "I think librarians are the easiest to operate on. You open them up and everything inside is in alphabetical order."   The third said, "I like to operate on electricians. You open them up and everything inside is color-coded."   The fourth one said, "I like to operate on lawyers. They're heartless, spineless, gutless, and their heads and their butts are interchangeable."   The fifth surgeon said, "I like Engineers...they always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end..."  

For those in the States, take time to remember those who gave their lives for the service of this country. Shed a tear, give a hug, say thanks....     Feel my pain... One day in heaven, the Lord decided He would visit the earth and take a stroll. Walking down the road, He encountered a man who was crying.   The Lord asked the man, "Why are you crying, my son?" The man said that he was blind and had never seen a sunset. The Lord touched the man who could then see and was happy.   As the Lord walked further, He met another man crying and asked, "Why are you crying, my son?" The man was born a cripple and was never able to walk. The Lord touched him and he could walk and he was happy.   Farther down the road, the Lord met another man who was crying and asked, "Why are you crying, my son?" The man said, "Lord, I am an engineer."   ...and the Lord sat down and cried with him.

What a beautiful day that has been made for you. Take time to rejoice and be glad.     Fishing Vacation An engineer and a lawyer were recently fishing in the Caribbean. The fishing was outstanding and they got to talking about their vacations.   The lawyer said, "I'm here because my house burned down, and everything I owned was destroyed by the blazing fire. The insurance company paid for everything."   That's quite a coincidence," said the engineer. "I'm here because my house and all my belongings were destroyed by a raging flood, and my insurance company also paid for everything."   The puzzled lawyer asked, "How DO you start a flood?"

Hug the ones you love.     Engineer's Diet We all know that it takes 1 calorie to heat 1 gram of water 1 degree celsius. Translated into meaningful terms, this means that if you eat a very cold dessert (generally consisting of water in large part), the natural processes which raise the consumed dessert to body temperature during the digestive cycle literally sucks the calories out of the only available source, your body fat. For example, a dessert served and eaten near 0 degrees C (32.2 deg.F) will in a short time be raised to the normal body temperature of 37 degrees C (98.6 deg. F). For each gram of dessert eaten, that process takes approximately 37 calories as stated above. The average dessert portion is 6 oz, or 168 grams. Therefore, by operation of thermodynamic law, 6,216 calories (1 cal./gm/deg. x 37 deg. x 168 gms)

After a week and a half of detention (quarantine - exposed, but not sick), here are some thoughts for the weekend. Take some quiet time to focus on those around you, those you love and see what you can do to make a difference. Call someone who is homebound and let them know they were on your mind.       Engineers vs. God One day a group of engineers got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God. They picked one engineer to go and tell Him that they were done with Him.   The engineer walked up to God and said, "God, we've decided that we no longer need you. We're to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don't you just go on and get lost." God listened patiently to the man and after the engineer was done talking, God said, "Very well! How about this? Let's have a man-making contest."   The man replied, "Okay, great!" But God added, "Now we're going to do this just like I did back in the old days

Get outside and enjoy the creation around you.   Einstein's Speech When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker's circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work.   One night as they were driving to yet another rubber-chicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks & manner) that he was tired of speechmaking.   "I have an idea, boss," his chauffeur said. "I've heard you give this speech so many times. I'll bet I could give it for you."   Einstein laughed loudly and said, "Why not? Let's do it!"   When they arrived at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur's cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. February 2nd came and went much like the excitement (or sadness) our friend "Punxsutawney Phil" brought to Punxsutawney, PA.  Four weeks ago Phil saw his shadow so it means we have two more weeks left of below-average temperatures here in the Northeast.  This is a theory I am willing to embrace as fact based on the 7 degrees on the thermometer today.  I actually drove my daughter to school so she wouldn't have a thirty minute school bus ride with cracked windows (the new covid reality we have gotten used to).             Our friends at Wikipedia said the faith we put into the prognostication (prediction) of this  famous rodent -groundhog (Latin name:Marmota monax) or woodchuck "...derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more

Have a great weekend.     My Birthday Last Year   I'm an audio engineer and I do a lot of bass-heavy stuff like trap and a couple older-style rap groups. With that in mind, my dad decided I needed a pair of 12-inch subs and an amp for my car. You know, to fill out the bottom end a little.   So, the day of my birthday, I was in town at my parents' house. He told me to get in the car with him and we start driving. I ask him where we're going but he tells me it's a surprise.   We roll into the parking lot of Subway. He had already ordered ahead and told me to wait in the car for my food. He brought out two 12-inch subs... and an Amp energy drink. My dad, folks.

Hello, PTC Community!   There is some exciting news to share with the PTC Community! The PTC Community Management Team has expanded!  Olivier Le Pord has officially started last week as our Online Community Director.  Olivier has vast experience with driving strategy and overseeing online communities.  I am delighted because Olivier is such a wonderful person to collaborate with and this means less meetings for me 😉     When Olivier is not participating in online communities, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, reading, and hiking. He even tinkers and plays the guitar (poorly he says...but I will make him prove that to me some time). Olivier has spent more than half of his life outside of France, his home country, and is currently based in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, USA.   I know Olivier won't be a stranger on the PTC Community.  Please feel free to give him a PTC Community welcome as a reply to this post. &

The earth is starting to break forth into life. I heard the chorus frogs in the marsh this past week. Between that and the sound of the rain last night, things are "spring"ing around here.     What did the mathematician say when something went wrong?   Happy Pi Day (and Happy Birthday to Albert Einstein)!   Interesting Pi fact I did not know....(but then again I am not an engineer or mathematician by any stretch) was that  "digits" (i.e. 3.14) for Pi have changed throughout the ages starting with Archimedes around 250 BC.  The article in Discover Magazine "Pi Day:  The History of the Math-Centric Holiday and the Special Number it Celebrates"proved to be helpful in learning about Pi!   Interesting facts from the article: Around 250 BC, Archimedes was able to show that pi is between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71, or in decimal notation, 3.1429 and 3.1408. Throughout the centuries, Chinese, Indian and Arab mathematicians continued to calculate pi to additional decimal places Welsh mathematician William Jones came up with the idea of using the Greek letter π, or pi, to represent this special constant.
