Check the Arbortext PTC/User Group page for a list of upcoming virtual meetings and webinars. Lots of good product information, tips, and feature-focus sessions headed our way. Here's a short list:August 28 User Meeting: Deploying and maintaining a large single-sourcing solution: Now what? This is going to be a great one. I've known the speaker for a while and even did a podcast with him. He's an long-time Arbortext customer who has done a lot of really interesting things over the years. However, one of the best things we can all learn from him is what it takes to deploy an Arbortext-style dynamic publishing system for a major company. At it's peak, his team of seven was managing the system for 700 writing staff. He was there in the beginning when they proposed the system to management and he's there today, 10 years later. It's going to be a great presentation!August 31 Webinar: DITA Style in Arbortext. It's Easy!I'm giving this one. We're going to sho
I am running Arbortext Editor version 5.3 M050 on Windows XP Professional SP 2. The Find/Replace window worked as expected last week. To my knowledge, I have not made any changes to my virus protection or security software within the past week. The settings are the same as ever.Today, in the same 30+ files edited last week, the Find/Change window won't open from Ctrl + F, or from Find > Find/Replace, or from the Find/Replace icon on the shortcut bar. Nothing at all happens. Zero, zip, nada. I checked the file properties, and they are still set with Write permissions. My first thought was that the Find/Change window may be a popup that is being blocked. I turned off my Popup blocker, and no dice.My second thought is that the Find/Change utility may be a macro, which Windows sees as a problem -- but I'm only fishing for the cause, hoping it may spark an idea that will lead to a fix.If you have experienced this same problem and have a solution, please reply. Any suggestions are welcome.
I'm running into a situation where the programmer in me wants to use astructure that would look like this:if ((type='checklist') and (foo='1' or foo='2' or foo='3')) then ...Attribute rules seem to be the place to do this but they don't nest. Ithink I've worked around this in a case or two by introducingpseudo-elements so I can split some of this processing out. Is this myonly option? that seems like a complicated workaround for something thatis so easy to express. My problem is that I have an existing stylesheet that is fairly completebut it only formats the tech manaul. Not sure how they intended to handleall the possible variations that are required. I want to leverage thisstylesheet to make a checklist version that has a few things different inpresentation, primary one being the page size, but there are also somenumbering and linking differences as well. This impacts a fair number ofelements and is getting out of hand.I have been working with 2 levels of logic, but now I found a req
Hello:I'm in search of a copy of the DTDs for MIL-DTL-81927, -28, or -29 from NAVAIR. If anyone could spare a copy of these legacy Navy DTDs I'd really appreciate it.Thanks,John Sillari

I could not stop sneezing from all of the dust. But seriously, this is exactly the kind of info that people need to post, in addition to the successful solutions to their previously-posted problems/questions. Some lurker somewhere may find this useful someday.
Hi all,Thought I'd report an interesting problem support and I diagnosed recently. One of my authors reported an Editor crash while formatting some content(via PE) containing new elements using an updated Styler stylesheet. Editorsubmitted the composition request, but then failed with an "[A12177] Out ofvirtual memory space. A swap file the size of at least 24 MB is recommended. However, the actual amount required will depend on how many documents areopen and how big they are. Other applications running simultaneously willalso require swap space. To increase your swap file size, open the ControlPanel, select Help, and search for "Virtual Memory". Follow the instructionsprovided." Editor quit immediately upon clicking OK in the dialog. After various testing, settings changes, etc., we determined that a newelement and related changes in the stylesheet were calling the Symbol font*and* Publishing Engine was using symbol.ttf (Open or True Type font) whilethe failing client workstation was usi
Hello,I want to add change bars to the deep splitting pages. However, Arbortext does not support deep splitting pages with change bars.I wonder if anybody has any solutions to circumvent this limitation? Thanks a lot!Bill
We recently migrated from 4.3.1 to 5.4. On 4.3.1, the editor did not acknowledge line breaks in the SGML, which is how an SGML editor is supposed to behave. On 5.4, however, line endings in the SGML are recognized and displayed on screen. This makes it very difficult for the authors to search on phrases.Any ideas? Thank you.
We have just migrated from Epic 4.3.1 to Arbortext 5.4. On 4.3.1 a line ending in the SGML was treated as white space and the editor would not break the line, which is the expected and desired behaviour. On 5.4, the line ending causes the line to break in the editor display. This makes it very difficult for the author to search for phrases.Any ideas as to why this is so, and how to fix it? (my current workaround is that I simply changed all line endings to white space, which is not an acceptable solution) Thanks!
I know this is old, too, but could it be a catalog issue? Are you using APTCATPATH environment variable, and if so, do you have %D included as one of the paths?
As most of you who know me know, I haven't been posting much the past year or so. I just haven't been using Epic to the degree that I used to. So now I am in a ketchup, no that is CATCH UP mode. I have been looking at topics as they flash by, just not really reading the posts, so if this question is old news (which I believe it is) pardon me.I upgraded my 5.4 from F000 to M060 the other day and now whenever I try to open an XSL file I get the obnoxious error telling me Epic cannot find the schema. One of my comrades in arms is using 5.4 M050 and she has the same problem. Is this something new (like the improvements in Windows 7?) or am I just not totally with it anymore? One other question while I'm here. Is there still an archive of Adepters posts somewhere on the PTC site?ThanksLynn
It's been a couple of years since I've had to do this trick and it doesn't seem to be available anymore. The trick was that at one time Arbortext/PTC(?) allowed two licenses for Epic, one on a 'fixed' machine and one for 'portable' use. I've upgraded laptops (from a dual core to quad core) and want to transfer the 'portable' license to the new laptop. The only license I see on the PTC site now is the one for my 'fixed' computer. Has this feature been removed during my hiatus or do I have to call PTC to obtain the key. I didn't see anything on their site related to this.Thanks.Lynn
I know that if you have, for instance, a concurrent license, and you look in your Arbortext...\bin directory, there will be a DLL file named "elmdlm.dll". If you have a fixed license, there will be one named "elmdsl.dll". You can add the use of a fixed license to a PC with a concurrent license that you want to use when it is disconnected from your network where the concurrent license is managed. You would usually do this for a laptop on which you want to use Arbortext while on travel.Conversely, you can do the opposite, so that a fixed-license-only PC can use a concurrent license on a network with a server-based license manager (although why you would want to do this if you already have a fixed license is beyond me).Anyway, you can do this by copying the desired DLL from the Arbortext.../dll folder and pasting it into the Arbortext.../bin folder. I believe this works for all versions of Editor up to 5.2. I am not sure about newer versions.
I have a need to pull selected information from my "master" XML file and write it to an XML file with a different DTD. I'll need a separate process to take information from that separate XML file and put it back in my "master." Does any one have suggestions about thebest way to go about this? Thanks, Carolyn Herlin
We use to have epic editor 5.1, which was showing many tags on insert markup popup windon mode selected as PI, whereas in case 5.3M100, we are able to see only 3 markups tags.if i want to see markup in mode selected as PI, tags expecting are newline, newpage, handspace, hyphen point, which were showing in 5.1version epic ediot.what needs to do to show these tags in 5.3 M100 epic editor
So I have a need to make white text on a black background for my headings.I've got thsi working with font color and highlighting (white text and abox with black). This is fine for the output but the editor is not displaying the text(white on white). The boxing is not showing up in the editor view. I canset the font background to black, but that looks grey and affects thecomposed result as well with a grey background. Is this where I need to start managing a editor version of the FOSI and acomposed version? What are the Apply -> Use for Editor and Use forComposed View supposed to do? I can't find any documentation on these...dan
I have a xml content has characters in china, Japan and Korean languages, generated pdf showing blank in place of these characters. What are pre requisites to support these languages on publish server(Arbortext Publishing engin 5.3).i have configured fosi file as below and server has installation of Arial Unicode MS<font style="serif" famname="Arial Unicode MS" size="11pt" posture="upright" weight="medium"width="regular" offset="0pt"/>.Does the server also require installation of East Asian language pack or any other configuration required?
I have a feeling this requires a psuedo element but I wanted to check. Ihave this rough XML content<manual type="checklist"><step> <challenge>text here</challenge><response>response here</response></step><step> <response>response here</response></step></manual>So I want to control the formatting of <response> based upon the following:- attribute type on <manual>- if <response> is precedded with a <challenge>I'm able to control the formatting based upon the attribute value (byitself) and I'm able to modify a counter (thanks Paul Nagai) that resetson <step> to 0 and increments when <challenge> is found. If challenge isnot 0 then I have my flag to control formatting that way.Is the best solution to drop a pseudo element in after the <challenge> andthen place the check of the attribute value on this psudo element? I wantthe special formatting to be removed if <challege> d
We try to implement Isodraw 7.1 M030 with our existing Windchill PDMLink 9.1 M040.I've been able to connect Isodraw with the UWGM and check-in .ISO files. I'm trying to retreive images (productview format .PVZ) from PDMLink into my workspace and then open it with Isodraw but I've never been able to do this.Any one faced this issue?
Hi,we are currently using Arbortext Editor 5.4 M020. We are extending the editor with Java functionality; one of the third party components used by our tool uses DOM Level 3 (in detail: Node.getTextContent()).Is there a reason why the editor does not implement DOM Level 3? The supplied Java Version (1.6.0.13) shouldn't be the problem...Is there a way to add DOM Level 3 support to the editor?Best regards,Mathias Harbeck
Does Arbortext IsoDraw support VB Scripting other than macros for batch processing.
I'm using Editor 8.0 for US Navy NPE PMS development. But I need to update the software with the following patches: Ad801x86.exe and Ad81win.exe In the support area of PTC it gives no updates for the version 8.0 software. Where or how can I obtain these updates?
Over the years, we've had questions from customers asking about the latest release. What's in it? Should they upgrade? Was my bug fixed? Is the enhancement I requested in there? It can be hard to convince yourself to read the release notes. After all, it's locked in a PDF. You have to go download it, it doesn't just show up in your mail box. It's painful and we feel the same way.In answer to that need and thanks to inspiration by a great PTC PLM (Yes, Simon, we mean you!), we've taken steps to answer that pain and make it easy for our customers.Behold: the Arbortext Release Notes Feed:http://blog.single-sourcing.com/category/products/release-notes/Point your favorite RSS reader at that URL or bring it up occasionally, and you'll never miss another release. We list the SPRs and new features right there for you to read. I think there's only been one case where we didn't list them all-- but the release notes were 200 pages long. That's a lot of SPRs. (A major release like that, you'll want
This is the second-most asked question on the forums. It's one of the most common questions we get. It's so common, there's a post about it on the Adepters Code Archive. From the article: Those Pesky PIsProblemOn save, Arbortext Editor adds processing instructions, like <?Pub Caret?>. How do I remove processing instructions (PIs) ?SolutionTurning off the PIs is easy. You change an advanced setting in the preferences:set writepi=offIt's documented in help topic #1587.
