The IoT Enterprise Deployment Center’s goal is to create and share knowledge around the best practices for architecting, designing, and deploying successful, enterprise-scale Thingworx IoT Solutions. To accomplish this goal, the EDC team takes a “real world” approach, using simulated IoT assets and users to benchmark the capabilities of different Thingworx deployment configurations. First, each implementation is pushed to its limit in an effort to establish real-world baselines, metrics which can be used to help customers determine which architecture choices will work for their custom needs. Then, each implementation is pushed beyond its limits, providing useful insight into where and why things fail, and illuminating potential implementation changes which could push the boundaries further. Through the simulations testing to come, the EDC will be publishing the resulting benchmarks for all to see! These benchmarks will include details on implementation goals
Energy. Innovation. Passion. That’s how I would describe LiveWorx19 in three words. From beginning to end, LiveWorx truly was a one-of-a-kind digital transformation event. Whether it was the top-notch demos, the delicious lunch from food trucks, or the unique integration of our products with our partners’ technologies, everywhere I turned, inspiration and excitement were booming. Here are my top three highlights: 1. Delivering a breakout session Chris Baldwin and I shared exciting new functionality that we’re releasing in ThingWorx to simplify and accelerate deployment of applications across your enterprise. We introduced Solution Central, a new portal in the cloud for application management and deployment (more info to come in a future post, but in the meantime, reach out with any questions). 2. Assisting with Xtropolis, our Demo Floor Speaking directly with you and hearing how you’re using ThingWorx to transform industries like medical devices, bee

It's been challenging, in the absence of OOTB Software Content Management (SCM) system within ThingWorx, to track, maintain code changes in different entities or to roll back in case of any entity is wrongly edited or removed.Though there's possibility to some extent to compare the differences i.e. when importing back the entities from the Source Control repository in ThingworxStorage. However this approach itself has it's own limitations.Note : This is not an official document, rather more of a trick to help workaround this challenge.I'll be using following components in this blog to help setup a workable environment.GitVSCodeThingWorx Scheduler ThingFirst two components i.e. Git & VSCode is something I preferred to use due to their ease and my familiarity. However, you are free to choose your own versioning platform and IDE to review the branches, commits, diff, etc. or simply use GIT Bash to review the branches and all related changes to the code. This blog divides into following
In this video we show the setup for anomaly detection (ThingWatcher) in release 8.4. We also show how to create an anomaly alert.

In this Blog, we will share some light about Gradient boost, which is a default algorithm in our Analytics platform. We will touch on:1) The main purpose of Gradient boost and how the technique works.2) We will look at advantages and constraint.3) Last some “nice to know” tips when working with Gradient.Gradient boost is a machine learning technique which main purpose is to help weak prediction models become stronger. Gradient boost works by building one tree at a time, and correct errors made by previously tree. The theory support reweights of edges which allows badly weight edges to get reweighted. For example the misclassified gain weight and those weights which are classified correctly, lose weight. It is kind of the same strategy when dealing with stocks; you balance the investment between bonds and share. An analog could also be done to illnesses; If a doctor informs that you have a rare disease, you want to make sure to get a few more opinions from other doctors, You will evalua
Since the marketplace extension is no longer supported and the drivers may be outdated, you may build your own jdbc package/extension: Download the Extension Metadata file Here Download the appropriate JDBC driver Build the extension structure by creating the directory lib/common Place the JAR file in this directory location: lib/common/<JDBC driver jar file> Modify the name attribute of the ExtensionPackage entity in the metadata.xml file as needed Point the file attribute of the FileResource entity to the name of the JDBC JAR file The metadata also contains a ThingTemplate the name is set to MySqlServer, but can be modified as needed Select the lib folder and metadata.xml file and send to a zip archive Tip: The name of the zip archive should match the name given in the name attribute of the ExtensionPackage entity in the metadata.xml file Import the newly cr
Installing an Open Source Time Series Platform For testing InfluxDB and its graphical user interface, Chronograf I'm using Docker images for easy deployment. For this post I assume you have worked with Docker before. In this setup, InfluxDB and Chronograf will share an internal docker network to exchange data. InfluxDB can be accessed e.g. by ThingWorx via its exposed port 8086. Chronograf can be accessed to administrative purposes via its port 8888. The following commands can be used to create a InfluxDB environment. Pull images sudo docker pull influxdb:latest sudo docker pull chronograf:latest Create a virtual network sudo docker network create influxdb Start the containers sudo docker run -d --name=influxdb -p 8086:8086 --net=influxdb --restart=always influxdb sudo docker run -d --name=chronograf -p 8888:8888 --net=influxdb --restart=always chronograf --influxdb-url=http://influxdb:8086 InfluxDB should now be r
Saw this great question in the Developers forum https://community.ptc.com/t5/ThingWorx-Developers/Thingworx-Permission-Hierarchy/m-p/556829#M29312. Answered it there, copying it to here: Question Hi, I have a few of questions regarding the permissions model in Thingworx. I can't find any documentation that explains it clearly. Hoping someone can help, or point me in the right direction for more in depth documentation. My understanding is that permissions can be set at a number of different levels. Collection Level Template Level Instance Level Thing level My question is, how do these levels interact with one another. Do they all get 'AND'ed together, or do those at the lower levels supersede the ones set at higher levels. e.g. If I set some visibility at collection level would this overridden by me setting a different visibility at say the Template instance level, or would both visibility permissions be valid. At each of level there is the ability
Today on Ask Kaya, I have a riddle. I was effective and trendy, but now I can be annoying. I sometimes tend to look out of place and I get in others’ space. I look easy to learn, but few have truly mastered my intricacies. Am I the floss dance? No, I’m not the floss dance. I’m the expression and validator widgets. It’s time to say goodbye to those pesky widgets that were super useful but super annoying. Yep, those widgets that littered your design canvas but were “Invisible at Runtime.” I’m talking about expressions, validators, status messages and event routers. In our next release, expression and validator widgets will no longer appear on the canvas at build time. You may remember from the previous post titled “Ask the Expert: What are the top three features in ThingWorx 8.4 that I might not know about?” In the post, we discussed the concept of Data Helpers, now known as “Functions.” What do Functions do? Functions give you th

Meet Chris. Chris leads the ThingWorx Flow portfolio, which will be releasing in 8.4. Chris has “a long history with workflow and a lot of interest in it.” He was originally hired as a product manager by Jim Heppelmann [PTC’s CEO] about 20 years ago to build a workflow engine for Windchill, our PLM solution. As a matter of fact, this feature is still a part of Windchill today. Pretty neat, right? We were able to leverage Chris’ workflow expertise and experience to create ThingWorx Flow. Check out more below. Kaya: Why did we create ThingWorx Flow? What challenge does it solve? Chris: In order for customers to realize the full business value for connected solutions, it typically isn’t enough to just surface an alert to show a dashboard of health. Customers want to automatically do things like create service tickets or automatically order consumables as they run low. To do that—to realize that automated value—you need a couple of things. First, you need to be able to easil

Thingworx extensions are a great place to explore UI ideas and get that special feature you want. Here is a quick primer on Widgets (Note: there is comprehensive documentation here which explores the complete development process ).The intention is not to explain every detail but just the most important points to get you started. I will explore more in additional posts. I also like images rather than lost of words to read. I have attached the simple Hello Word example as a start point and I'm using Visual Code as my editor of choice. The attached zip when unzipped will contain a folder called ui and metadata xml file. Within the ui folder there needs to be a folder that has the same name as the widget name. In this case its helloworld. Metadata file - The 3 callouts are the most import. Package version: is the current version and each time a change is made the value needs to be updated. name: a unique name used through out the widget d
Protocol Adapter Toolkit (PAT) is an SDK that allows developers to write a custom Connector that enables edge devices (without native AlwaysOn support) to connect to and communicate with the ThingWorx Platform.A typical use case is edge communication using a protocol that can't be changed (e.g. MQTT).Prior to PAT, developers had to use the ThingWorx (Edge or Platform) SDKs, or the ThingWorx REST interface, to enable the edge devices to communicate with ThingWorx.OverviewPAT provides three main components: the Channel, the Codec, and the ThingWorx Platform Connection. The Channel implements a network protocol to communicate directly with the Edge Device. Its responsibilities include reading data from an Edge Device, writing data to an Edge Device, and routing data to the correct Codec. You can implement your own custom channel or use one of the out of the box channels provided by PTC : WebSocket, HTTP (1.0.x) and MQTT (1.1.x).The Codec translates messages from your edge devices into mess
You’ve seen him before. You’ve heard him before. Fans around the globe can’t get enough of him. He’s… ...Joe Biron—our CTO of IoT! Hear Joe share his thoughts on the future of the industrial IoT with ThingWorx in Episode 03 of our “ThingWorx on Air” podcast! Any questions? Just Ask Kaya. Stay connected!
The accuracy of a predictive model can be boosted in two ways: Either by embracing Feature engineering or by applying boosting algorithms straight away. There are multiple boosting algorithms like Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, AdaBoost, Gentle Boost etc. Every algorithm has its own underlying mathematics and a slight variation is observed while applying them. While working with boosting algorithms, we have come across two frequently occurring buzzwords: Bagging and Boosting. Bagging: It is an approach where you take random samples of data, build learning algorithms and take simple means to find bagging probabilities.Boosting: Boosting is similar, however the selection of sample is made more intelligently. We subsequently give more and more weight to hard to classify observations.Below are Default Algorithms used in Predictive Models generated in ThingWorx Analytics:Decision TreeGradient BoostLinear regressionNeural NetRandom ForrestLogistic RegressionGradient boosting is a machine learni

Question: What are some best practices around building IIoT solutions with ThingWorx? Meet Ward. Ward works on the product management team for our Manufacturing Apps (i.e. Asset Advisor, Operator Advisor, Production Advisor, etc.). He’s a super cool and smart guy, and he always has an answer to my ThingWorx questions. He has so many answers, in fact, that he worked closely with other ThingWorx experts like Sangeeta to create the ThingWorx Application Development Guide. I sat down with him to hear his top few tips from the guide. And, just in case we don’t have enough fun around here on “Ask Kaya,” we decided to list his top tips not by “1”-“2”-“3”, but by “W”-“A”-“R”-“D”. Without further to do, here are Ward’s top tips from the ThingWorx Application Development Guide. Whitelist your IPs for application keys. (See page 67.) Auto Refresh widget vs. GetProperties service? How should I update live data to my mashup? (See page 25.) Reuse components to incr

Hello readers, This week @ Ask Kaya we thought we would give someone else the keyboard for a different point of view on the platform. I’m Chris, a Product Manager here at PTC working on the ThingWorx platform. Instead of telling you what is coming in our next release, or interviewing one of our awesome PTC experts, I thought I would take a moment to reflect on the platform’s success and dream about where it could be. After visiting with customers and partners at PTC Forum Europe this week, it looks like many of you share in our vision. This is a bit of a fun post and by no means an exact look into ThingWorx 2019, but see what you think. When I think about the next generation of ThingWorx, here is what I see: I see Mashups that generate themselves with suggested visualizations based on your input for style, user persona, and navigation I see Thing Models that populate, based on your use case, your equipment and your connectivity I see a self-learni
When predicting a Boolean goal such as Failure in the next hour or any other goal that has a yes or no answer, Thingworx Analytics(TWXA) models will output a 'risk' of the event occurring. TWXA will intelligently pick a threshold beyond which that risk warrants attention. 1. In Analytics Builder, click on the export button 2. This will export a PMML model and download it for you 3. Open up the PMML model, in the output section, you will find a condition that explains the threshold that was selected by TWX Analytics. In this example case, TWXA chose 0.5 as the best Threshold. Note: The export button will only be available in Builder for TWXA 8.4+.
