I am having some trouble getting my screen FOSI to perform the way I expect it to. I have an element which may or may not have content.When the element has no content I want to save the word "None" as a text variable and use it elsewhere.When the element DOES have content I want to save the actual contents as the same text variable name and use it in the same location as the "None".It works fine when I just save the element content as a text variable and use it elsewhere, except that I get blank content when used elsewhere, instead of the word "None", when there is no content. We would prefer the word "None".I am trying to use an <att> to test for the existence or non-existence of a value for a the above-described text variableLet's assume the text variable name is "a.txt". It doesn't seem to matter whether I use <specval attname="a.txt" attloc="#FOSI" attval="#ANY">, <specval attname="a.txt" attloc="#FOSI" attval="#NE#\\"> for the #ANY caseNor does it seem to matter

This is a question from a co-worker. He is trying to figure out how to save to the hard drive a well-formed XML document that he wants to create in memory. He's trying to create the document by using a doc_open command, but this doesn't work because the file doesn't exist yet; using the command without specifying a filename doesn't cause an error, but it's not known to him where the document is saved by the doc_save command.Seems simple enough: he just wants to create a document in memory, insert data into it, save it, and open it later for reading. This should all be invisible to the user.Should he be using "file_*" commands instead of "doc_*" commands?Does any of this make any sense to anyone? Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions/possible solutions. To date, none of them have worked and after a group meeting yesterday I found out the problem is worse than I originally thought. For some authors, not only does AE 5.4 not release the folder, but it also ties up the document, causing the entire CMS checkin to fail (the CMS checkin deletes all files in the checkout folder and then the checkout folder itself). This is happening even with multiple documents open in which AE's focus is switched to another document prior to the checkin. This happens for some authors consistently. Others, including me, cannot reproduce the problem in which the closed file is not deleted.I've opened a call with PTC concerning this issue, C7765517.Dave

Hi,I'm trying to open documents via COM in Arbortext Editor and supply Doctype and Stylesheet on the fly. This works fine for DTDs, but when I specifiy an XML Schema instead, the Editor fails to open the document. Adepters:We're updating all of our authors to Arbortext Editor 5.4 and have had a problem reported that can be consistently reproduced. We use text entities extensively and have found that if you inser a text entity in a paragraph and then move the cursor to the right, you can no longer use the return key to list the elements valid at that point. Instead, the status bar shows the message "Cannot insert tags at cursor, because the region is protected or read-only." However, you can insert tags using the menus or control sequences - and you can also insert normal text. Clearly the region is not read-only, but appears to be when you use the "hit return" interface to list available tags.Anyone seen this? Anyone know of a solution? Or, is it time to open a case with PTC?Dave

Hi, I use Arbortext to XML-based online courses using a custom Flash engine for publishing. I often have the need to embed smaller SWF files within the XML for display in the course player. But I also have a need to publish these courses in PDF format for reviewers. I use the Compose PDF option of the File menu, not the Arbortext Publishing Engine. I want to be able to embed SWFs in the PDF so that they are interactive and will play within the PDF. I have seen an example of a SWF in a PDF like this. Does anyone know how to set up a stylesheet so that the SWF will be embedded in the PDF? I have an element that contains a path to the SWF file in an attribute. The best I have been able to do is specify the path to an html file that launches the SWF in the attribute and then define the element as a link. But this gives me a clickable link in the PDF file that launches the SWF in a separate window. I would like to have the SWF embedded within the PDF rather than linked. Does anyone know how

I have 5 objects that use a single callout number. If I try to use 5 callout lines, the shadows from each one cover the ones below. I need them all to have shadows over the lineart below. I tried using a polyline that zig-zagged back over itself so that it could point out all the objects, but I am being told that in the final proprietary viewer, the lines dont look like they do in Isodraw. Any ideas?

Is there a way to tell CadProcess to open a 3D drawing (an IGES file for example), in Wireframe instead of RENDERING as per default?I could see that opening a drawing in that way, speeds up the opening from 20 to 35%.Many thanxFlavio

Adepters:Another problem in our move to AE 5.4 M150. If an author makes some edits and closes the document - but leaves the editor open, the folder containing the edited document cannot be deleted unless AE is closed entirely. This causes problems for our CMS when the document is checked in as it automatically removes the checkout folder. There have also been reports that the document is tied up, even though it was closed and a checkin fails completely (I haven't reproduced that problem, however).Are there any tricks we can use to get AE to release the directory when a document is closed? Restarting AE is not a good option as the author may have several windows open.Dave

A customer of mine is trying to author his document in 5.4 M030 but constantly getting Stack overflow exception errors.Not sure why this is happening but tends to be when manipulating tables. This does not happen in 5.3 M170.Has anyone else had this problem ?

I have installed cadprocess on a 64 bit machine for testing purpose, and I could see that cadprocess is launched in 32 bit emulation. Does exists another version 64 bit native that I cannot download from the website, or it is not supported as 64 bit native? If actually there is not a 64 bit native, is there a plan for this development? Many thanx Flavio

Is anyone using EMS2 in AE 4.3.1? I can't download 4.3.0 (which is what our EMS2 is set up for) and when it recompiles the doctypes for 4.3.1, it is screwing up the capitalization of attributes in the maintainae compiled files. In our move to AE 5.4 M150, many authors are reporting very poor performance when first launching the editor. I've confirmed this even when opening the editor without a document. It takes anywhere from 40 to 90 seconds, usually the first time you open the editor. If you immediately close and then reopen the editor (again, without a document), it opens in just a few seconds. Anyone have any idea what's going on during that initial open. It has nothing to do with our doctypes, etc., as it happens without opening a document. Maybe there are some default preferences that need to be unplugged?Again, this was not an issue with AE 5.2 M130, our previous level.Dave

I am building an ascii data stream and writing it out to a text file.Each line of text needs to be terminated with the null character which I am appending to within the ACL via :text_line=string . chr(0);When I open the text file in Notepad++, and view symbols it is not displaying the NUL symbol; Other ascii symbols appear ok.Am I using the correct ACL syntax ? Do I need to provide an extra parameter when writing out to the file ?Regards,Andy

Hi, DITA and Arbortext users and gurus:Anybody know how to disable the warning you get if you try to insert a topicref into a reltable cell and the type of the topicref does not match the type of the reltable column? We want to put topicrefs of type "html" into the reltable, which are links to external websites (format=html, scope=external). We want to put them in the reltable column of type "topic" (actually a specialization thereof) and we get two warnings when we do. Though this involves a macro, it seemed to be a general font issue.We utilize a copyright symbol in one of our documents that is created entirely in IsoDraw. I replace this by macro at particular times. One of our associates in China, however, ends up with a question mark instead of a copyright when the same sequence is run on their machines. Another China associate does not have this problem. We've made sure our fonts match on both China machines and our US machines. Any thoughts on why this might be happening?

When choosing between Print Composer as opposed to Arbortext Publishing Engine for generating PDFs, am I correct in saying that the former is more suitable for lower levels of output rather than the latter which is suitable for very high levels of output ?Please can someome clarify when one should use the latter over the former ?Regards,Andy

I have an element <rotate> permitted within the CALS table model <entry>that does some funky in the usetext:source="%\hbox{\special{pub: rotate 90}%,#CONTENT,%}%"In tables on portrait pages, this gives me text rotated 90 degreescounter-clockwise. I must manually set the row's height since the rotationtakes place after the formatting engine determines that. However, in tablesthat appear on portrait with landscape content or true landscape pages, myrotated TeX text doesn't show up.Any TeX mages out there that could suggest a mod to my rotate hack thatmight work on landscape output?Or know another way I could achieve this in 5.3 m110?(Looks to me like I'll be screen capping and shipping graphics, which I hatebut have done before.)-- Paul Nagai
